Nice to meet you, I’m Onni and I come from Oulu. This city is located very far north in Europe—so much so that we have a subarctic climate! Our winters are long and cold, but summers are getting warmer.
We’ve learned that climate change brings heavier rainfall, which can cause flooding in the streets.
What are floods?
Floods can happen for many different reasons and there are several types of them. Even so, we can say that a flood occurs when there is more water in an area than the ground can absorb.
What can we do?
Although controlling floods is complex, we can prepare and organise ourselves in our neighbourhoods before the rain arrives.
Ask yourself
Is the place where you live prone to flooding? Have local authorities established an evacuation plan? Are there people in my neighbourhood who might need help evacuating?
Answering these questions in advance is much better than doing so when the rain is looming.
Do not underestimate water
Floodwater is murky and unpredictable—you can’t see what’s beneath your feet. That’s why it’s very important that…
Never attempt to walk, swim, or drive through floodwater!
And I give you the
letter “O” for Onni!
